Three €150 energy credits, free school books, a 25% cut to childcare fees and more are being unveiled as part of Budget 2024

Energy costs are still more than double where they were two years ago, food and drink inputs have seen serious inflation, insurance premiums continue to grow while the national minimum wage increase will see labour costs rise by over 10% in the coming months.

Ms Campbell noted that Irish tourism and hospitality has experienced unprecedented increases in operating costs over the last eighteen months. “All this is coming at a time of reduced growth. The Government projects that growth will slow to 2% each year out to 2030. This will make it difficult to fund public services and social protection through growth. There will be increased competition over a smaller level of resources.

"Minister McGrath said last year 'it is important that we acknowledge that persons living with a disability face additional costs.' These costs were acknowledged in the Indecon Report, and the recent Green Paper, at €8,700 to €12,300 per year and yet there are no such cost of disability measures in Budget 2024.

Inclusion Ireland has labelled the €12 increase in disability and carers allowance “a disturbing blow to human rights” “This is the first Fianna Fáil Budget in over a decade, but some things never change. At a time when rents are skyrocketing, Minister McGrath announces tax breaks worth €160 million per year for landlords - without any evidence this will help to improve conditions for renters.
