President Biden is scheduled to travel to Philadelphia on Friday to address union jobs and the clean energy transformation. Considering that this week has been designated as"Hydrogen Week" by the Department of Energy , speculation is growing that this visit to Philadelphia might coincide with the announcement of the winners for the coveted Hydrogen Hubs, with a total investment of $7 billion.
In April 2021, Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm announced the Hydrogen Shot program, which aims to produce hydrogen for $1 per kilogram within a decade. Notably, in November 2021, the $1.2 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act was signed into law, allocating billions of dollars for climate, energy, and clean technologies, including $9.5 billion for hydrogen programs.
While the initial plan from the DOE was to award four hubs, the preparatory work and efforts to gather information resulted in an adjustment to award between six to ten hubs, each receiving funding ranging from $0.5 to $1.25 billion per hub. The program, announced in September 2022, had solicited 79 letters of intent, followed by invitations to 33 groups to submit proposals.
Hydrogen atom has a mass of 1.008 atomic units, which is why October 8 of each year is celebrated as Hydrogen Day in the United States, and this tradition has now been welcomed globally. Given that this year Hydrogen Day fell on a Sunday, the celebrations have extended throughout the week. Perhaps we can anticipate a significant hydrogen announcement this Friday when President Biden visits Pennsylvania, one of the member states in the Appalachian Hub.
