The family of a great-grandmother who died when her oxygen support cut out during an unplanned blackout in Western New South Wales has welcomed a new SMS alert system.Gloria Shea's life support equipment stopped working when Essential Energy cut the power to repair a faultEssential Energy will send a text to registered life support customers within 30 seconds of an unplanned outage occurring.
"She just celebrated her 80th birthday and to think a couple of months later she would die because of a power outage, it's just ridiculous in today's society," Mr Shea said. "These are billion-dollar industries where they should have risk assessed themselves a little bit betterMr Shea said his mother had backup oxygen bottles in her lounge room.
"Essential Energy is always investigating how we can improve our customer service while always operating in compliance with the appropriate laws and regulation," they said in a statement.
