Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has repeatedly touted the federal levy, starting at $20 per tonne and rising to $50 in 2022, as the centrepiece of efforts to fight climate change.

But the policy has faced stiff opposition from conservative politicians and a court challenge launched by Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. Alberta’s provincial carbon tax has also emerged as a major wedge issue ahead of a spring election in the oil-rich province.

In Ireland, a parliamentary committee is scheduled to report in coming weeks following a recommendation from a citizens assembly last year that advised steadily increasing the country’s carbon tax from current levels. That has been largely overshadowed by a key vote next week that will determine the fate of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s efforts to salvage a Brexit deal with the European Union.

British lawmakers are set to vote Tuesday on Ms. May’s revised withdrawal agreement from the EU, which hinges in large part on a provision that guarantees there will be no hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Failure to secure a pact would deal a severe blow to the Irish economy and undermine the 1998 Good Friday Agreement that ended decades of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland and put an end to strict border controls, Mr. Bruton said.

Chris_Bittle UN Wealth redistribution Tax where any family over $70 k get ZERO back

Why

Bring on the Guinness & Irish Whiskey

If the government is going to refund Canadians then what’s the point in having a tax?

why not its for the people and its a grand one and besides Canada is doing very well comparted to G7 countries . Stats are in and even bias news can't change the recorded stats although they try

I doubt that very very much...

More tax is wrong. Legislation is what's needed. Look at the automakers that lied and got caught. Fines will get results. More tax is simply wrong!

Hahahahaha...

Give him the strongest craft beer to get him back to his senses.

I couldn't find the rebate on the tax return form.

lambert_pp LOL.... Ireland !!! No you don't !! MaureenDalby Tell the what Ireland REALLY wants !

Another government wants to follow our Ecofraud model better warn their citizens about being taxed to distribute wealth with zero environmental impact.

The government. Not the people.

It's just a wealth distribution scheme, with the rebate money coming from deficit spending. Oh, and with NO effect on the environment. 🙄

There are no “rebate cheques”. There is a tax credit on the T1. Many other factors - credits, deductions, taxes owing will determine whether an individual/family receives a tax “refund”. carbontax cdnpoli

In a year from now Canada won’t have a carbon tax so he doesn’t have to worry about following anything.

CarbonTaxREFUND

The stupid it hurts

they'd better do the math as the liberal_party is only giving $154 tax credit which cones NO WHERE NEAR the amount to cover ones carbontax

Watch for the companies that moved headquarters to Ireland look for new homes to avoid the regressive tax scheme that does nothing to help the climate.
