Ultra-luxury automaking goes all-electric with the Mercedes-Maybach EQS680, but does an SUV like this need a V-8 or V-12 engine?

Maybach is one of the oldest, still-operational marques in the ultra-luxury auto market even though it hasn't been a constant presence over the past century. The automaker first resurfaced as an offshoot of DaimlerChrysler in the 20th century with the arrival offor the 2003 model year. More recently, the name appeared as a part of the Mercedes-Maybach division, which specializes in building über-opulent versions of Mercedes-Benz's flagship models.

The chauffeur experience is as exquisite as you'd expect. We spent some time on a whale-watching boat during our time as guests of Mercedes-Maybach, and then we were picked up after three hours at sea by a caravan of EQS680 SUVs. Settling into the rear seat and activating the hot massage, which even heated up the rear headrest pillow, was an affirmation this car does something notably different and special from run-of-the-mill luxury vehicles.

Not only is the 2024 Mercedes-Maybach EQS680 designed to be visually distinctive from lesser trims of the SUV, but a unique scent perfumes the cabin. The automaker calls the signature smell"No. 12 Mood," and says,"beguiling freesia and spicy clove evokes associations of an exotic spice market." Right, then.
