Rachel Reeves will outline plans to redistribute profits made by new clean energy projects to people through their local council and in the form of direct payments

In her conference speech on Monday, Ms Reeves will pledge to overhaul the UK’s ‘antiquated planning system’ in order to ‘get Britain building again’ Local communities will be consulted on the development of clean energy infrastructure and, if they improve it, would then be offered incentives such as cheaper

Energy bill discounts for communities close to new infrastructure projects is a policy that was first announced under Boris Johnson’s government and then again under the premiership of Liz Truss – but has not been delivered. Other measures under consideration include giving local authorities greater powers for compulsory land purchases and building on some green belt areas.
