Dublin City Council has led calls for the two-wheeled vehicles to be banned.

Image: Shutterstock/Leika production Image: Shutterstock/Leika production DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL has led calls to have electric scooters banned from public roads and cycle paths.

A report in today’s Irish Examiner quotes a spokeswoman from the local authority, who said the council believes the two-wheeled vehicles should not be used on Dublin’s streets. It has been argued that, like bicycles, scooters cannot be classed as mechanically propelled vehicles and therefore do not fall under normal traffic, licencing, tax, or insurance laws.

But the neither the council or gardaí agree with this view because the scooters use an electric motor to propel their users. However, the Road Safety Authority says the scooters cannot be used on public paths, leaving users with nowhere else to use them but public roads.

This Poll is much more clear

Why? Clearly they are part of a solution to a problem the government won't address.

I’m surprised the nanny state hasn’t outright banned them already. I’m a cyclist but I think they’re great. Our public transport is already at capacity. Cars are what kill and maim - bam them!

No but people on bikes without helmets should

Yes

In theory their fine. Unfortunately very few of those I have seen on them have any apparent road experience or road sense.

Why should they be banned

I see people on these everyday, & I don't see anymore harm than a person on a bike. I think they should be considering banning cars from the city centre before these considering these scooters. Cars are inefficient in any city centre. A bit of common sense is needed please.

They are akin to electric bikes. I don't hear of DCC trying to ban those. Serious cup of 'Cop the fuck on' is needed by DCC.

SharonFitzh yep

No

No it's electric, after all they are saying they want electric on the roads and no insurance need they are just low powdered scooters they are the way to go

The roads are so dangerous. Consider the possibility of facilitating them on bicycle lanes when available

It's also time to allow low powered pedal assisted electric bikes that can also be propelled via a throttle alone. Ridiculous that they are put in the same category as mopeds and motorbikes.

Gov't hate anything happening they can't licence or tax, so looking forward, they won't ban it, they'll just tax it.

No , police state , thanks for promoting it .

Would rather see them ban private cars in the city, than these things. They're a positive game changer.

Start with footpaths

Oh yes, a viable alternative to gas-guzzling, dangerous cars should most definitely be banned, brilliant fucking plan Dublin

Penalising people who are reducing congestion is a ridiculous hill to die on.
