Over 800,000 families could be in for an electricity bill shocker if they fail to take action by the end of March 2024.
But figures collected in June this year state that some customers at some of the UK's biggest energy firms - including Scottish Power and E.ON Next - continue on the outdated system. This means that these households are at risk of losing functionality if meters are not replaced by next April, reports Chronicle Live.
However, when the signal is switched off, these meters may be left jammed on during peak times, meaning customers could see bills rise. With just months left to go, Ofgem has already told suppliers that it is disappointed with the lack of progress to ensure that customers are swapped over to newer smart meters.
