The Ford Ranger's inexorable evolution has entered a new dawn with the official announcement that it will soon be available as a plug-in hybrid. Although certain markets, such as Australia and New Zealand, will be getting the Ranger plug-in variant in 2025, there is still a question mark over its future in South Africa.

"The Ranger plug-in hybrid is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family – offering customers zero-tailpipe emissions EV driving for short trips or hybrid performance that delivers incredible on- and off-road performance," said Andrew Birkic, president and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.

This derivative of Ranger features the all-new 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system. According to Ford, it provides a zero-emission driving range of more than 45 kilometres on the batteries alone. It provides very low running costs on shorter commutes while still providing the normal driving range thanks to the internal combustion engine.

Ford's Pro Power Onboard is another useful feature that leverages the battery system. Power outlets in the cargo bay and cabin will allow customers to power their tools and appliances wherever they are.More details on the Ranger PHEV, such as where it will be manufactured, charging speed and clarity on market availability, are likely to emerge in the coming months.
