STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSAfter reading Peter Jackson’s review of World Energy GH2’s Environmental Impact Statement posted on Friday, Aug. 25 and his article, entitled “Critics of Port au Port project back on warpath…,” published Thursday, Aug. 31, a huge red flag has been raised in my mind about this project – a project that our government seems to be hell-bent on approving in a hurry.
If at-risk species’ habitat loss or destruction isn’t bad enough, we have the prospect of erecting 164 massive wind turbines on a fairly small area of land on the peninsula, effectively making the whole area an industrial wind farm. "What would the province and taxpayers be getting out of it for all this long-term destruction of landscape?" -And then there is the possibility of accidents such as ammonia/hydrogen leaks and turbine collapse or blade dislodgement. I remember, when I lived in Burin in 2008, watching the blades for the St. Lawrence wind turbines being transported to the site. They were massive. It took at least 10 minutes for a truck carrying one of them to pass by.
According to Energy Minister Andrew Parsons in yesterday’s announcement of the approval of four bids for wind hydrogen projects in the province, these four approvals will mean $11.7 billion over 40 years or less than $300 million per year.
