The Marinus Link project, which is set to export renewable energy across the Bass Strait, has sparked fierce debate among state politicians.

The new agreement lowers the debt the state incurs from the project - with an initial outlay of between $106 to $117 million. Tasmanian Labor leader Rebecca White claims the Premier was"adamant" costings couldn't be released because the government couldn't"breach contracts, breach confidentiality, and breach disclosure agreements".

Ms White voiced her concerns that Tasmanians will face higher power bills as a result of the project, describing the Premier's ability to manage the deal as"outrageous". "Tasmania does need more energy. You need more electrons being produced on the island. And to make that viable, this cable is necessary because while a lot of that electricity will be consumed in Tasmania, not all of it will be and to make it viable, we need a sensible way to export it to the mainland," he told the radio station.
