We love its opulence. Cramming the front passenger seat hard up against the dash allows the right rear to go full La-Z-Boy. This, combined with the seat's heat, ventilation, and massage optionsits 31-inch fold-down 8K TV screen, make a reasonable case for diverting a household's man-cave budget to a BMW dealer.
The power-closing doors are brilliant, the control touchscreens on the rear doors wow passengers, and the feature allowing owners to automate things via geotagging—like lowering a window when you approach a key-card gate—promises meaningful convenience. Then there are just-for-fun features, like the selfie-photo widget triggered by a smile, and Qlocktwo display that spells out the time. We love the cruise control's hands-free mode and its novel ability to set two speed offsets .
Too many of the features in this car are unintuitive to figure out, and too many of the controls seem different for difference's sake, requiring frequent or deep study of the owner's manual. We used the car for three days before we learned how to activate hands-free mode on the cruise . The auto-stop/restart function shook the car noticeably, and an unknown wake word kept activating the voice assistant in normal conversation. The worst offending"feature" was a screen that comes on after you stray over a lane marker two or three times that says something like,"hey, you're departing the lane a lot; you can continue driving, but would you like to open the owner's manual or close this message?" We wanted to shoot that messenger.
