Why is Ford so focused on a three-row EV for the near future? Well, it makes for a more compelling, more marketable package in, and the packaging efficiency of all-electric vehicle platforms—with the battery laid flat and motors located on the axles—means interior space and layout can improve. In theory, you could have the same exterior dimensions as a conventional vehicle with more interior room, hence more electric models potentially being offered with a third row.
Currently, Ford only sells the gas-powered Ford Explorer and Expedition SUVs with three rows of seating in the U.S. The Explorer can fit seven occupants. The Expedition shown here offers seating for up to eight with a reclining final row of seats. Ford doesn't offer an EV with the same functionality.Executives have likened the upcoming three-row EV SUV to a"personal bullet train"—in the sense of being personally for your family—that'll be slightly smaller than the Expedition. It will target 350 miles of range from a relatively compact battery likely rated around 100 kWh.
