The fire, which started at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, quickly spread from the deck to the side of the house, eventually extending into the attic and open windows, crews said.
They said the homeowner sustained minor injuries while trying to extinguish the fire and received medical aid on site. Additionally, one neighboring resident required medical attention for smoke inhalation.Layton City Fire Department released the following safety tips for using outdoor cooking equipment:
Properly extinguish hot coals and embers: Ensure that hot coals and embers from BBQ grills or smokers are fully extinguished before disposing of them in designated fire-safe containers. Create and practice an escape plan: Develop a comprehensive escape plan for your household, ensuring that everyone knows the safest and quickest way to exit the home in case of a fire. Designate a meeting point outside your home where everyone can gather.
