ANCWL dumbfounded by Tina Joemat-Pettersson's death, as she was tipped for deputy president

The untimely death of former minister of energy Tina Joemat-Pettersson has crippled the plans of some members of the ANC Women’s League who endorsed her for the deputy president position in the forthcoming elective conference scheduled for Nasrec next week.

However, Joemat-Pettersson's death on Monday has sent the lobby group to the drawing board to find a suitable candidate to challenge Ntombela. Senior ANCWL officials said they were confident that she was going to emerge as the deputy president of the league after the conference next week. Joemat-Pettersson who lost the position of first deputy secretary-general to Nomvula Mokonyane by 50 votes at the Nasrec Expo Centre last year, was one of the favourites to become the deputy president of the ANCWL. “Based on our observations and support, she could have been a perfect deputy president,” said the NEC member.

The party described her as an intellectual with political maturity and passion. In a statement released on Monday, the ANC said Joemat-Pettersson was a dedicated person in defending those who were vulnerable in our society, especially women.
