Putting a powered dolly between the tow vehicle and the trailer could provide a lot of benefits.

—contractors, landscapers, vehicle transporters. For those folks, get a vehicle with the equipment to handle moving all that mass … pretty simple. For folks who only tow occasionally, the decision-making process gets a lot more complex. Maybe you're towing a camper, say, four or five times a year? But you've got to size and equip the vehicle properly to do that, even though it's not hauling a load the rest of the time.

With the right sensor suite, this powered dolly could hook itself up to the tow vehicle automatically, or with a special controller handle inserted a person could move it around in a yard or storage area easily. It could provide auxiliary power to the trailer for off-grid camping or construction site equipment.

The patent also envisions on-the-go charging from the lead vehicle to the powered dolly, something that is not yet common although with lots of buzz about other types of trailers potentially providing some propulsive assist, perhaps this will change. This would surely be some sort of proprietary system—no extension cords. The important takeaway here is that a dolly like this would let a vehicle that couldn't tow the load by itself do just that.

That would be a nightmare to back-up.

A caravan with e-axle and battery makes more sense... 🤔😋

This is a genuinely good idea.

This seems to create a problem similar to consisting two model railroad digitally controlled locomotives. Keeping the dolly power delivery consistent with the car is critical. Otherwise you have a 5,000 lb car being pushed by 10,000 lb trailer, or the car is dragging the dolly.

Motor trend sucks

Dolly's are ideal for tow vehicles where the maximum tow rating can be exceeded providing the dolly is rated for weight and braking performance..direct pull rating for any tow vehicle must be revised since the direct load(downforce) is not involved..

Crazy..that's like synconizing too different DNA animals in one body..spells disaster in my opinion..Dolly's are fine even with brake assist, but not independently powered, even if it is complicated LT syncronized..just crazy..

OR, Just use an 'INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.'

I’m against electric energy, powered vehicles, but if you were not towing that far, this could actually be a practical use, but thinking that you can switch cars within 10 years to all electric is not unreasonable but it’s not practical the savings doesn’t justify the cost to…
