Help keep family & friends informed by sharing this articleLiberty Steel has signed a contract aimed at ending the role of coal in steel production in Whyalla. The furnace could reduce Whyalla steelworks' carbon emissions by 90 per cent by 2025The $485 million deal with international equipment company Danieli for the construction of a new electric arc furnace will replace the old coke oven and blast furnace.
"This will put Whyalla firmly on the map, not only decarbonising Australia's steel industry but also feeding the world with green iron, decarbonising steel supply chains all over the world," he said. SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said if the electric furnace could be powered by renewable energy, it would allow Whyalla to produce iron and steel without any carbon emissions.
But what about the coal.......
Who's gonna buy the world's most expensive steel? Certainly not China, whose furnaces are coal-powered.
This is great news! As long as they use genuine green electricity.
More of this please!
Green... 😆 🤣
Every business should be subsidised in the same way as Whyalla.
Carbonless steel? Total clowns.
Are Greensill and Credit Suisse financing it? Gupta is a crook. How much taxpayer money is he extracting for this fallacy?
Um … you people are absolutely incapable of telling the truth ! To make pure steel, iron and carbon are needed. DefundTheABC
Reliable base load, you let a blast furnace go cold next six months you will be refurbishing it. This greenwashing is bullshit.
I wonder where they get all the electricity from? Oh yes, fossil fuel burning power stations. And at today's power price, this plant will be bankrupt in less than 6 months.
Will end in tears. Electricity will be so expensive, won't be worth it. Coal is best and basically harmless to the environment
Where do we plug it in?
🤡🤡🤡🤡
Green? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is what a cult looks like.
Racist!
Engineers be like:
You'll still need reliable energy to power it... Solar can't do it.
Hang wasn’t Whyalla meant to have been wiped out by the ‘carbon tax’?
Um, no. For it to be steel, it still needs to have carbon in it, so no, this will not end the need for coal in steel production.
