The referendum concerned only rented e-scooters, and has no impact on the use of the privately owned vehicles.
Although the vote was a landslide, it was a poorly attended one. Just eight percent of eligible voters turned up to participate in the referendum, something that the e-scooter companies had feared.in 2022, 71 percent of them were under 35, and people as young as 12 can legally use them. In an attempt to get out the vote, the scooters companies launched Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok campaigns, and offered free rides to people who typed “Je vote” into their apps on Sunday.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said that she is “committed to respecting the choice of the voters, purely and simply.”
