cooling. You can think of a heat pump as an air conditioner that can also work backwards.Because heat pumps move heat around instead of burning fossil fuels for heat, they are more efficient than gas furnaces. And while heat pumps are typically more expensive on the front end, the savings come over time when you end up spending less on gas, says Brian Rees, a heat pump installer at Bryant Air Conditioning & Heating Company in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Kircher says you can also save money if you can buy a heat pump for both your heating and cooling needs."It's typically cheaper than buying a gas furnace plus an air conditioner," he says.Like refrigerators or air conditioners, heat pumps use refrigerants. The primary refrigerants commonly used in heat pumps are called hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, says, associate professor of Energy and Resources at UC Berkeley.
Below 32 F degrees heat pumps are Inefficient. Highly.
I'm sorry but I can't trust state-affiliated media.
NPR stop pushing heat pumps. Are u in advertising now? How about listing what it really takes from earth’s resources to build one of these units and the fact that fossil fuels are used to operate the electric grid. “Key to climate solution” is a farce.
What form of energy is used to produce electric heat?
ELECTRIC heat pumps....how exactly are those powered? Fossil fuels maybe? 🤡
These are trash. We used them both up north and down south ... Up north they didn't heat the house. We ended up have to use conventional heat. Heat isn't needed in the south - and the cooling does not work in 90+ degree weather. It cost a lot to service. Frequent.
Jesus fucking duh finally
MAGAS: “Something new and better? I don’t like it! Everything was perfect in 1955 and it’s all been downhill from there!”
Sky high electric bills and don't handle North East Cold Nights
How is this better for the environment?
funny I've been told when the heat pump kicks on that means something is wrong with your unit and the electricity bill will soar
I bought one and installed it myself for a garage and it works so well. It uses very little electricity. The ability to heat and cool out of one system is awesome.
They use a tremendous amount of electricity and start fires. Not a good solution.
Brought to you by the electric heat pump companies.
I know they don’t work if the power goes out. Just like the stoves.
hey how bout some real news?
They suck.
They’ve been around for years. Quit playing games. Never met anyone who moved and didn’t switch back.
Ayesha Rascoe's poor English on weekend edition helps NPR how? I am sure all the black people will donate to NPR filling in the 10 million dollar void that results in 1000 layoffs.
I am scratching my head how having a black american woman using ebonics or poor english announcing the NPR weekend edition news helps NPR. Expanding the NPR demographic to black people that have no money helps NPR how, other than further pushing it into bankruptcy.
Fu. Enemy of the people.
Electric Pumps are powered by Fossil Fuels.
Heat pumps will not have a significant impact on the current trajectory of global warming, unfortunately.
Love my heat pump but glad I have my gas boiler for when it’s really cold.
TheCherieBomb
Wow… news huh? Might as well change to a shopping network..
Isn’t geothermal more eco-friendly?
As an hvac tech, heat pumps aren't a 1-size-fits-all solution, and they may have difficulty keeping a house warm during extreme cold snaps. There are also generally more safeties and transducers that can go wrong on them, and mechanical repairs are also more expensive.
I have one in 🇦🇺 and it’s fine. Temp range 5-40C. Cheaper to run on heat than the cost of wood for a fire in winter. Obviously brilliant in summer.
I’ll stick with natural gas thank you very much
There is no climate change emergency
Cost a fortune to run. And do not heat well at all.
“Run on coal”
Yeah just like gold medallion electric baseboards of the 70’s it was the heating system of the future till the energy crisis… so we are building another energy crisis? This won’t make us green. Serious smoke n mirrors.
I will not give up my gas stove. Or my vintage high power shower heads.
For $1750 I added a 2 ton 22 SEER mini split in our house. Our electric bill when from high 200's low 300's a month in dead of summer to about $135 in summer, as low as $40-$50 winter. The DC inverter technology allows the compressor to throttle down using less electric.
What does this have to do with the weather? Ridiculous
Get a wood stove to provide heat in the late fall thru early spring.
They don’t work in cold climates like Indiana
Time to buy stocks of electric heat pump companies.. Make your money, dont fear when stocks drop or pump. When they drop? Buy in cheaper and sell high. Do it with all stocks or bitcoin. The market manipulators want you to fear by every news story. 🇺🇸🤔
I installed a mini-split system in my first house and it was great. 18,000 btu in a 750 sq ft home was perfect for mild western Washington. Now that I live in the Midwest, I would want a bigger system (and a wood stove for backup) but I still plan to get one in the future.
No thanks
Once fossil fuels have been eliminated, as NPR promotes, your electric heat pump will not work when there is no wind or sun.
NPR fails to provide evidence for why a 'climate solution' is needed. By now, the 'climate crisis' narrative has been beaten into your viewers and they don't even know they are programmed. NPR likely has an ESG investment portfolio, and manipulates its readers to this end.
They are horrible, good luck
I love my ground sourced heat pump.
What fuel generates electricity for your heat pump?
This is hilarious. Heat Pumps are a joke.
I had a heat pump when I lived in South Carolina. It sucked.
I hate my heat pump. I have 2 zones, one is a heat pump and it sucks.
Lol....lol......
