Quebec maple syrup industry is the envy of the world but could be put to the test as the effects of global warming take shape in the next century.

"The sugar bushes are well situated, where even if the envelope moves a little, there are pockets that will remain and that will still be favourable," said Sylvain Delagrange, a professor specializing in plant ecophysiology at the University of Quebec Outaouais."We could have tapped these forests today, but we likely can't any longer. Their future potential will be lost due to the displacement of the climatic niche.

When night falls and the mercury drops below zero, the tree freezes. The gas in its fibres contracts, creating a suction that dissolves the sugars in its vessels with water drawn from the soil through the roots. This is the absorption phase. Regardless of the climate model used, be it moderate or extreme, the average temperature in Canada is expected to rise by 3.2 to 6.3 C by 2100.

In the spring, when the maple wakes up from dormancy, the accumulated sugars mix with the water absorbed by the roots to be used for the resumption of growth. This is called maple sap.

News No warming in 15 years. Warmer is better, btw. When is CBC going to turn the heat down to 5C in all of their offices to save the planet? Why haven't they done this already if global warming is a concern?

Temp has to stay between -5 to +5 and sunny so they're screwed. It's a cartel to keep prices high. Artificial flavoring is just fine.

We would be better off with less syrup. woof

Good Grief! give it a rest

Won’t the syrup flow better with global warming .

Great .. I've got a 100yrs to enjoy maple syrup 😜

Any concern about the Destruction of the Maple Syrup Industry from Fiona in NS? You could double the narrative, and insert 'Severe weather' also.

It was an amazing year for Maple Syrup. The Yield, even off our Maples on our front-lawn, was incredible.

That's your takeaway? Our syrup is in danger? How about the trees? If they're not cycling what'll that do to them?

I alway think of maple syrup heist in Quebec.

Bull crap. Stop spreading lies!

The fake stuff is way better and way cheaper.

Global warming based upon ?

Just want to let concerned citizens know that my syrup is as sweet as it ever was. No need to worry. And no - it’s still not for sale.

Calling BS on this climatehoax

Suppose anyone reading this story will be around in the next century to verify it?

Yep...certainly looks like they are having a hard time....

Alot can change by 'NEXT CENTURY' Could be, maybe, not sure, possibly, theoretically, theres a chance, fear mongering, exaggerating, agenda. Potato, Patatah.

If Quebec would ban fossil fuels and fly more Ukrainian flags, the maple syrup problem could have been avoided. Our only hope now is more drag story hour for the kids. That should cure all of Canada's problems.

South of the border will get hit first, so we better watch there...

Just what I needed. A Sappy story this morning

Having 90% of maple syrup manufacturing centralized in Quebec is your first issue.

Because this is the first time climate patterns changed...

Lmaooooo

May be that should wake up some well-fed deniers but I doubt it. Besides, the effects are inevitable and irreversible now.

Uh huh.

Plant some new trees further north.

Facts don’t care about your bs.
