Energy firms call for windfall tax to fall with oil and gas prices

Oil and gas prices have now come down from their highs.

"If this tax is changed, as conditions and prices have changed, that would be a positive move that would go some way to start rebuilding confidence," he said. It comes as the government is expected to set out measures to boost the UK's energy security on Thursday. The Financial Times reported that ahead of this, ministers have been holding talks with energy firms about adjusting the windfall tax if oil and gas prices dropped below a certain level.

Why do we put up with this?

We need the taxation on fossil fuels to continue, we need them to be higher and taxation on renewable energy to be lowered to encourage investment. Else we get the opposite.

All well and good but why arn’t my bills falling ? 61p per day standing charge their taking the piss

How about no.

I'm here for the resounding cries of 'Fuck 'em' in the comments.

They are crooks. Racketeering

Surely as these firms do with their time lag reduction in prices have to accept a delay in excessive profits windfall tax reduction.

Laura Keunesberg still pushing anti Brexit propaganda? Never what her myself!

If prices are falling, why are our bills going up? Increase the windfall tax, greedy bastards

EnergySecurity concerns, actually means markets will be less profitable in future, supply more stable & the racket-y greed will be all the more noticeable as renewable capital investment massively reduce costs for the long term.

But it isn’t a real windfall tax: it’s a sham.

The cheek! Our bills have not come down! My electricity has shot from £156 a month too £400! And my gas from £56 a month to £150! It’s crippling us and the economy!

We wouldn’t want the poor lambs to struggle

When oil price was -ve (2020) oil companies got no help, so there were massive layoffs. When Rus invaded Ukr companies like BP lost billions (Rus assets) no help again. Oil price goes up and tax takes all the UK profit. Result - no more investment in UK. This country is nuts.

Wholesale prices have been dropping since December, but we're still paying more it's time for ofgem to go

They can f… o..

Piss off! Customers have been ripped off all this time while they make BILLIONS. My heart fucking bleeds for them

Your windfall tax can fall when MY energy price falls and NOT before...

No. Let the shoe be on the other foot for a good while longer!

Taxes are on profits not on price !!

This is exactly why we need a fair and transparent tax system where the level of corporation tax rises in proportion to profit, instead of ad hoc, knee-jerk taxes; then there is no room for this sort of argument

And I bet the government do it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Logical

It should go up.

Of course if they would lower their F’in prices!!

They got all the last windfall back masquerading as 'help' with the manufactured cost of lving crisis. Their prices should be forced down by govt to protect the economy/country/people but CON people won't do that. Mussoline said fascism 'is a merger of state and corporate power'

Windfall tax needs to rise until these vultures go bust.

Aye right after my bills do.

Energy firms are in the polar opposite financial position to the NHS and households. It's disgraceful to call for lower taxes for them whilst retail energy prices remain high and progress with net zero investment is low. It's all that's wrong with the UK economic strategy.

How about the amount they pay as a windfall tax depends on how quickly they pass on the price cuts to customers. Without incentive, I doubt they will as quickly as they passed on the price rises.

The bloody cheek of it

Are they repaying the overcharging and reducing my bill from £1,170.00? Guess not. A very one-way transaction!

Racketeering

Ofcourse there gonna say that. Bonuses need to be made up. And some old rich guys farrari needs a new wheel.

This is a contrast to the Environmentalist policy. Basically, it would negate the whole 'Save our Planet' that people want.

They are just laughing at us!

Absolutely not. Defund the bastards.

🖕

My direct debit has just gone up £70 next month ? This doesn't reflect what your saying. So no would be the answer.

Maybe they should lower their prices if oil and gas prices are falling…

Consumers call for retail prices to fall with wholesale prices.

Utilities industry is just asking to be nationalised. What a mess.

Is the owner of BBC Roman English or Scandinavian English?

When they drop their prices and standing charges then fair enough - until then you can swivel

Sheer, bloody cheek.

I’d leave them to suffer

When we see significant reductions in our bills then you can maybe ask if it’s possible until then 🖕

How about reducing the prices you charge then too?

Are the prices they charge customers falling No Then neither should thier taxes

How about our energy bills fall then eh you greedy b******s 🤷‍♂️

These companies are shielding shareholders from the reality of the situation. Like they're immune from inflation 👎

To divert attention, the Govt. is waking up Right wing elements, cheap copies of KKK in the UK to some hapless immigrants and boatpeople. The uneducated white working class thinks that the immigrants are responsible for all the ills. David and Kazza are perfect examples.

How about cost the customers also going down with prices? Have seen no sign of that?

Goodness!!! the nerve of these greedy selfish Companies.

This is taking the piss.

Then the tax should be made retrospective to before it was introduced

Two words. Get lost. When rocket and feather pricing models are dropped, then we'll support you. Until then, read those two words again.

So they're admitting that the prices have come down but consumer prices are still extortionate. Righto. Nothing but a bunch of crooks.

No on there over the top profits and bonuses they pay

Tax should be on all exec pay & excessive dividend payouts.

I want to warn to all american and european and australian do not eat all meat hogs.pigs.porks and chickens of communist vietnamese and china .because when they feed these two animals they mix with food one sort chemicals to sleep when we eat meats porks and chickens

How about getting our fuels bills down 30% first….

Why aren’t you reporting on this. LetWomenSpeak

What windfall tax was that then?

OEUK_ try decreasing our prices in line with falls first?!?

What needs to fall is the £91 in every £100 of windfall tax that energy companies get back if they invest it in yet more climate-wrecking oil and gas extraction.

Reduce our bills first!!! Then bitch about your windfall tax reduction

What about they cut bonuses instead?

Our government has a completely submissive attitude towards energy providers. They’re now sourcing their wholesale energy at lower prices, but still talking about putting our bills up. We have the highest energy prices in the world and our government enables these scoundrels.

Lol

But they bought it a year ago when prices were outrageous apparently? So next year there should be no windfall tax, no Cake and eat it.

Unlike our bills

Don't they realise tax doesn't work like that. Unless they dramatically drop their prices, profit will increase, so tax should follow.

The f'ing cheek. Gas prices fell back to normal rates weeks ago and yet I am still paying over £500/month. OEUK_ have got misplaced their compass. Time to regulate these chancers.

Well cut yer fecking prices and we'll see !!!!!

energy firms can F right off!! windfall tax should only fall when bills for consumers fall. The cheek of these ruddy companies! Do they want us all to bed over too!

Energy should be nationalised.

Its a scam within a scam within a scam. Kind of used to it these days...the most important thing are the backhanders.

More self serving quotes. They were low for far too long

Maybe it should be delayed the same as our bills...

My direct debit was increased by £69 a month for gas and electricity...and I'm in credit! What are these falling prices they're talking about?

Ovo launches energy deal below government price capThe supplier launches 12-month tariff of £2,275, as falling gas prices finally start feeding through to bills. I'm guessing that's known internally as the mug punter tariff. And given wholesale gas prices are the same as in 2021 they could halve that and still make a profit.... How can this be a saving? Ono's unit charges are exactly the same as out current supplier Scottish Power. Tongue in cheek advertising to me, offering something that is no cheaper?
