The SMMT uses its latest sales update to warn that the budget must address affordability and access to charging for electric vehicles, as the clock ticks down to the 2030 ban on the sale of new cars powered by petrol and diesel.

Almost 500,000 new hybrid and electric cars will be seen on UK roads this year, according to new industry projections, following a spurt in production and sales.

A shortage of semiconductors largely linked to COVID disruption in Asia has held back production, and therefore sales, of new vehicles globally though that chip squeeze is finally starting to ease.Hybrid electric vehicles recorded the most significant growth of all fuel types, up 40%, followed closely by petrol.

"This will inevitably increase demand for charging infrastructure, however, and while the new £56m LEVI capability funding is welcome, there remains a clear requirement for binding targets that ensure chargepoint rollout keeps pace."Food delivery firm Gousto plunged into governance storm after slashing valuation

Wow, the kids in DRC will be busy then.

So who will buy them whilst food, energy bills carry on rising.....

Hybrid cars are not pollution free at the tailpipe by definition. They are just standard Internal Combustion Engine Cars with a couple of big batteries. A trusted news organisation should not mix the two together as it it implies Hybrids are carbon free at the tailpipe

There may be a ‘spurt in production and sales’ but there hasn’t been a spurt in wages and pensions to enable people to buy them?

They are 100% NOT “green” so I really don’t know why Government is pushing for them!

Now predict how much a gallon of gas is going fall...

I cannot wait to see people trying to sell them few years later at point when battery needs replacing… it will be a great concert of complains from every naive moron believing they would last forever or 🤣 those cars will be worthless…

Scrap them waste of money many people having huge problems with these cars battery runs out quickly

They need to get the charging point’s installed a bit faster.

Another political con: first, no road tax, then tax; first, low re-charge cost, now electricity is sky high. And still not enough charging points (that work).

Keep those children digging!

All made outside the UK BREXITSHAMBLES

Can’t wait to get rid of our EV and get a hybrid or go back to petrol. The charging situation (unless you’re at home) is shit.

That will take a lot of power from the Grid.

Don’t make one for me

It's only a spike if it drops sharply afterwards.

Companies swapping for electric cars as its 100% deductable. Thats why Hybrids only do 35 miles.

Good luck charging them when you are not at home.

Expect and reality are different things. At half a million, I’d b surprised tbh

Yeah baby

The so called media cost of living crisis must be over exaggerated if people can afford these cars in the first place! Should be an extra spike in electricity use due to these sales!

Mugs!!

No thanks

Bullshit.

🤣

I can't hear the frigging things: that's a worry!

Doesn't the production of lithium batteries cause more harm than good? Will stick to petrol for now

Mugs..

We can't afford to have our lights on in the home let alone charge a fucking car.

Not sure why anyone would buy an electric car. They lose mileage due to cold weather and that's before you put on heaters or aircon. Germany have said they are not pushing the 2030 deadline.

Most of them made in China 🇨🇳

Obviously lots of electric cars sitting in fields, better sell them before blue Hydrogen arrives !!!

Why ? There is no infrastructure

So gas powered then

I’m sticking to petrol - I can’t afford an electric vehicle and I have nowhere to put it.
