The growing need for lithium — a mined metal used in batteries to power electric vehicles, could have significant international environmental and social impacts if the U.S. doesn't reimagine its transportation policy, according to a recent report.

We never learn do we, keep putting the cart before the horse. No foresight AT ALL

Has anyone added up how much carbon is emitted mining all these rare metals, mining all the extra copper for hydro lines building and supporting EVs?

When the batteries are no longer effective, the materials were never consumed. Recovering the materials is part of the solution. The rest of the solution will come as long as we accept the responsibility to do it the right way, not the greedy way.

I believe we all know we need an alternative to gas vehicles, but let's not have our heads up our ass by thinking mining lithium, batteries, and the disposal of batteries are a good way to the future. Nevertheless, what it ultimately will cost us in many ways

Oh yeah, we are eco friendly in Canada….not. EV are a joke in Canada. We cannot sustain EV’s and EV’s can’t sustain us.

What? No way.....

Well no shit eh? Seems like it would be better to maintain the infrastructure that’s already in place. Imagine all the diesel it’s going to take to do that….

No fossil fuels. No batteries. Time to bring back the horse I guess. defundcbc

So basically the green energy is worst than what we have now

I love all the folks who could care less about pollution suddenly very interested in the pollution caused by mining for EVs (but literally none of the other pollution 😂🤣)

Walking of a ledge with knee-jerk responses.

How about the slave labour mining the Lithium? I am concerned that your reporting is missing key facts. Please report the news in its entirety not just pieces of the narrative.

Environmentalists cried out in loud protest because of fracking and its impact on water systems and pollution but are notably silent on mining lithium using brine extraction. Reversed pollution in the name of climate change!

Green tech here is a nightmare somewhere else.

Finally. Electric vehicles are not the cure-all for our environment. If you could put an end to end social/environmental price on EVs it would be worse than conventional fossil fuel.

“Canada will need to produce 40 times the current amount of lithium by 2040 to keep up with demand”. So the EV targets are nonsensical then. End the climate virtue, and actually create some realistic goals…like preventing general pollution.

Lithium is one of the most abundant elements on the planet.

Oh boy you guys are slow. I’ve been saying this for years. The idea everyone will own an EV is a fallacy. The amount of lithium mining and processing to meet that demand is not possible or sustainable and would do irreparable damage to the environment.

When will CBC, who wants to be respected as free press, write unbiased full reports on the environmental impact of mining these precious metals that until now had been gracefully glossed over. Mining exploration used to be a big deal but doesn’t fit the current narrative.

We should be looking towards hydrogen powered cars not electric.

Ya electric cars will not work on a global scale these are things we have known for at least the past 100 years.

Batteries can't be the way of the future, the environmental impact of battery production and disposal will be worse than fossil fuels ever was. Why don't we go all in on Hydrogen, Japan is all in and the environmental cost to mother earth will diminish quickly with technology

I’m surprised the CBC is running a truth piece , nice work and about time .

I think this is all a ploy. Some countries don't have the oil Canada has,so let's go electric! In Man. Sask. Albert, we have way too many kms to travel to places to have electric vehicles work.

This is completely backwards Instead of reconsidering the ecological, humanitarian, and economical impacts of a green future We're just going to plow straight ahead into a dystopia wef climate alarmism agenda future

More then 100.000 slaves (mostly forced child labour) are part of “clean industry” today. Not to mention a level of environmental devastation caused by mining in Africa and Asia that was never seen before in human history. Welcome to the Green New Deal

Umm, any comments/articles from CBC on the Chinese election interference story gaining traction by the minute?

Plenty of leaking fossil fuel, watching snow melting & daily deep breaths of invisible chemistry. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't, after a major storm without a 21st century solar panel.

Are we chasing older technology with Sodium-ion batteries now starting to show up on EVs. Costs will come down for more to afford.

I can see where this is heading. Only the rich will be able to afford EVs because of the 'shortage' of lithium, and the rest of us plebs will lose access to personal transport (to save the planet). Guess we'll be needing the 15min city so we can walk.

A summary, so it can be easily understood, please!

I can't wait for in 20 years, the next generation will be screaming at gen z for destroying the environment for lithium and cobalt mining. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
