Tom Bradshaw warned that 'volatility' from geopolitical events, such as the war in Ukraine, as well as climate change, was putting pressure on supply chains.

A lot of people would be eating turnips right nowBut she added she was"conscious that consumers want a year-round choice and that is what our supermarkets, food producers and growers around the world try to satisfy".Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video playerMs Coffey, echoing the BRC's comments, had blamed the shortages on"very unusual weather" in places like Morocco and Spain, which supply much of Britain's fresh produce during dark winter months.

These items are usually grown in heated, lit glasshouses during winter in the UK, but were planted later this year as farmers struggled to meet energy costs.Image:The NFU has urged the government to extend a support package for energy costs to horticulture and poultry, two energy-intensive industries that were left out of the financial scheme.

Failure to strengthen food supply chains will lead to"more instances like we have now where there's less availability of home-grown produce and at times when imports are disrupted," Mr Bradshaw told Sky News on Friday.

Hyperbole

Heating UK glass houses to grow salad crops out of season had become so expensive that consumers would not/could not afford to buy so supermarkets understandably are not willing to buy so UK producers won't plant. Add brexit import red tape & imports become costly. Perfect storm

Back in time when we were more self sufficient, tomatoes were a seasonal food - like many others. Availability was time dependent. We managed perfectly well without them and enjoyed them even more when they arrived. It’s a good lesson in not taking everything for granted

It's almost as if we write your stories for you isn't it.

Some more bullshit shyness

'CLIMATE CHANGE' ☺️

Nowt to do with WEF agenda then, closing the farms down, thought not.

it's brexit....FACT! stop playing the tory tune everyone is sick of it

We chose to brexit the supply chains so ces la vie

Yep it's brexit, 2 years ago we left and all of a sudden this year we have a tomato shortage, who would of thought it would take 2 years for tomato crop to grow

How? Can someone please explain with absolute logic how the war in Ukraine and climate change is affecting supply chains. It's like over the last few years when companies failed to deliver on time they simply blamed covid and moved on.

Doesn't seem to affect any other country only the UK. Its nothing to do with geopolitical events or climate change... Load of old tosh.

Tomato’s SEVERELY affected by Ukraine war 😂😂😂😂 British politician life expectancy severely affected by turnips, cake & brandy at tax payers expense..

Just BREXIT. NOTHING MORE, NOTHING ELSE, NOTHING LESS. BREXIT FAILURES. But wait There's even more to come

Ukraine aren’t struggling for tomatoes? Funny that. 🤔

Husband went in both the coop and aldi this afternoon. Not 1 gap.

Shortage. Popped into Lidl earlier and they were full up.

Why war in Ukraine ? There are no food shortages in Ukraine.

It was the weather the other day, now its Putin's fault. Media need to choose their lies carefully

The UK needs to be self sufficient and protect its borders. We’re not a country right now

Yet there’s plenty throughout Europe.

So not Brexit again. 🤔 Whatch Remoaners, once again, ignore this.

I don't see the Ukraine on this list, who are you trying to kid?

All bull sheet ..no climate change none

Bullshit

it's own unsustainable 'green' policies

Spanish farmers and exporters blaming Brextit red tape and trade barriers. Easier to export within the EU.

“Ukraine” “Climate change” or…

Nope it’s brexit- again . Nowt to do with Ukraine

Climate change 101. No global warming in over eight years. 🙄

Just England though . The rest of Europe has noticed no difference at all.

Erecting trade barriers with the 27 countries closest to you, which didn't exist 3 years ago, doesn't help.

Tomatoes come from Ukraine?

....and forgot one more thing...Labour's repeated inference to join the European Union is causing shortages....!!

A huge change is also consumers paying a price that allows tunnel growing in the UK. In the summer, cheap salad, in the Winter, not so cheap

STOP LYING SKY SCUMMEDIA

Why are you so freaking scared to talk about Brexit! You wouldn’t stop talking about it before the referendum and now it’s a taboo

No mention of Sun flares?

Stop pushing this shite it’s Brexit that has caused this nothing else European shops are full of fruit and vegetables that are half the price that we’re paying.

It's only Climate Change dogma (like Net-Zero) that's piling pressure (like fuel costs) on supply chains. 🤷

Bullshit

It's the wevver, guv, 'onist! Nuffink to do wiv Brexit.

Try harder

If you dont want France or Spain to allow refugees to travel to the UK then you can't expect them to send fruit and veg when they can sell it at home!

Geopolitical? But not the Brexit word!?

Supply chains where if you are part of the largest trade block in the world you get first option on goods. If you're not - get in the queue

People say it's Brexit but then do fk'all about it. What's worse is people don't care about tomatoes they just want to progress an argument lost in 2016.

I voted remain, that must be the reason I got tomatoes and peppers this morning no problem

Ridiculous

So Ukraine supplies the whole world's food!!

Why do you have a picture of fruit when talking about vegetables

And also pay farmers the correct price so they can make a living.

Can't afford to grow them in the uk because our bills have tripled. Try again!

Huge huge areas of land are left empty ..save the planet 🌏

we do produce our own, its supermarkets refusing to pay the extra for farmers cost increases

Haha what has Brexit done for us eh ?

Nonsense, we can’t grow that stuff in Winter time

Retweet if you think an adapted version of the song 'Yes, we have no bananas' should be the UK's new national anthem as brexitfoodshortages TomatoShortages are here to stay

I wish grow my own was an option however council has told me remove ALL my flower boxes as they create an obstruction.

I thought the NFU wanted to be controlled by the failing EU Dictatorstate

Yet we have tons of refugees sat in hotels who would be gagging to work and help pick foods needed and work on farms. But let’s waste billions on keeping them there and trying to get them out of the country.

Brexit you fools, other countries have no issues, simple

STOP LYING SKY. THERE IS NO FOOD SHORTAGE.

scummedia

The 'great brexit tomato shortage' will be just like the 'great brexit fuel shortage' and 'great brexit border problems' on the first day of kids summer holidays. It will last a limited time and suddenly disappear, despite brexit still being in effect before and after!

Chickens coming home to roost now after years of outsourcing to cheap foreign imports.

Maybe if the NFUtweets hadn't been in bed with the Torys for decades this might not have happened.

bit late for that now, and how do we do this?

There is no shortage, just like the “fuel shortage” it’s a ruse to push the prices up when it’s available
