Eskom's acting head of generation Thomas Conradie says that the company did not move beyond Stage 6 load shedding this week, but dropped large customers from the grid, which took the dropped load to more than 7 000MW.
There was concern earlier this week that Eskom had implemented Stage 7 without informing the public because just over 7 000MW of demand had been dropped. Load shedding leads to the removal of 1 000MW of demand per stage. Conradie said that in addition to load shedding, Eskom has other levers to reduce demand. These include dropping large users with whom Eskom has arrangements to shed at a certain time in exchange for discounted electricity tariffs.
