Consumers are far more interested in hybrids than all-electric vehicles, but environmentalists believe cars like the Prius are an unnecessary detour on the path to electrification — and it's time they fade away.

Toyota unveiled another version of the Prius at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2000. The Toyota Prius, first introduced in Japan in 1997, was the world's first mass-produced gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle.Daniel Lippitt/AFP via Getty Images

And on the sportier side of the spectrum, Corvette just introduced its first hybrid: the E-Ray. The gas mileage isn't impressive. But with an electric motor about the size of a Folger's coffee can tucked between the front wheels, it's the fastest Corvette ever, capable of going from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds.

Garcia, with the Sierra Club, says it's essential to pull off the transition to zero-emissions vehicles as fast as possible. Every year of delay locks in carbon emissions for years to come given the increasingly long lifespan of vehicles on the road. Penny pinching gas is a good thing. It results in lower cost products and achieves freedom goals for the common man. Full electrification forced on us rips off the taxpayer in favor of the few.

As someone who can't fit their cars in the garage and does want to pay an electrician to add a charging station. My Hybrid was the best option. 54 mpg for a 45 Mile commute each way. Cut my emissions by a third. Not perfect but better.

Combustion cars are gonna skyrocket and be collectibles lol

We have an electrical grid groaning on its death bed, and these naive pundits think electric cars are the BEST solution? Jesus. 3/4 of the people in this country would not even be able to use them.

Environmentalists don’t live in reality.

Hybrid was the next step. It would have helped the transition and the mindset on change.

All or nothing zealotry is always a warning sign for me.

Cigarette to e-cigarette

I have a Hybrid and full electric. Problem with the hybrid is it still needs gas. It doesn't get enough electric miles to matter over the same ICE car to make a difference. 35mpg vs 37. Picture thousands of ICE hybrids stuck in traffic vs EV's.

Come back to me about EV's when the batteries are better and will last longer than I want to keep my car for.

So make all electric vehicles with range and we'll talk...

I love the flexibility of my PHEV. I drive mostly on electric but like the back up gasoline when needed. I wish all cars would go this route!

It was scary going all electric. Now I regret taking so long. ⚡️

What needs to go is ICE without any hybrid. That will do more to improve the environment than switching all hybrids to EVs

Thankfully, NPR will fade away.

Hybrids make far more sense than straight electric.

Democrats are always against what people want. The hybrid is a compromise between fossil fuels and green energy and the radicals want no part of compromise

we need to get rid of most cars. EVs are not a solution to the climate crisis.

Not hybrid nor electric cars, we need trains, buses, and bicycles.

All I want is Amtrak everywhere, bike lanes and good intracity transit.

Well...who gets to decide? Environmentalist or Consumers? I'll let an Environmentalist make my consumer purchasing decisions once they agree to pay. Until then, I'll decide what's best for needs

Not sure I buy that. It's clear to me (at least where I live) the demand has shifted to full electric.

A plug in hybrid can be charged on a typical 120V outlet and get most people to reduce fuel use by 80% minimum!

BanCars

actually, I think hybrids are the better long term solution. we simply cannot support mass EV electricity requirements with a broken national grid. the next step after that is actually hydro then possibly nuclear-powered flying vehicles. I'm already over the Tesla hype. bored.

Much better just to keep gas cars.

We have been driving EVs for seven years. Will never go back. Much easier to livewith than ICE.

Electric cars are not good for the environment either.

If hybrids were the only cars made in the past 20 years, I'd agree, but as it stands, hybrids make up less than 10% of the total cars on the market. ICEs still dominate and there is not enough infrastructure to support all electric. A forced and sudden switch would never work.

I'll take a hybrid.

No!! I love my hybrid. I had it for 17 years & still going strong. With good care & proper maintenance, it's going to last another 10-15 years.

We don't need EVs.

Getting cars off the road by improving public and alt transit systems will do a lot more for the climate than sustaining our destructive car culture by swapping out one type of car for another. The world needs less cars not different cars. Please report on this

A few condo and apartment house fires generated by EV's should put a stop to the craze very soon.

I am all for electrification but there needs to be major upgrades to infrastructure and there needs to be a serious discussion about high speed rail. There are people who live in the middle of nowhere and currently electric is not the answer for them.

I like the Grateful Dead and they say, 'Not Fade Away', but I agree with this article.

Hybrids provide a viable alternative to all electric by covering both modes.

My kids would really love to buy ev's, but apartment complexes and workplaces don't have charging stations. I drive a hybrid because it was the most efficient option in my area in my price range.

, have you seen how PG&E is increasing electricity costs in California? There's a CA electric car mandate by 2035. But little action to improve electricity supply & reduce prices. Oil companies are being criticized for price gouging, but why not PG&E? This needs action.

That’s a beautiful car for the price.

After watching governments disable people's access to funds or their own businesses, I'm really not interested in owning a vehicle they can turn off at will.

room for all

Too bad

Not everyone has a EV hookup at thier residence - I live at a condo complex with no EV hookups. That was the biggest factor in my buying decision. And no - I cannot bike, walk or bus to work.

Toyota needs to step up their EV game..

Environmentalists are gay demons

(When I said 'Toyota', I mean hybrid. Ain't buyin' all-e anytime soon.)

My 15 year old Prius still gets 43.2mpg. Hybrids aren't going anywhere until the battery issues are solved and there's a sufficient charging grid in place.

The concept of personal vehicular transportation as an essential has to go.

See - this is why MSM is losing credibility - statements like this 'Consumers are far more interested in hybrids than all-electric vehicles' says who?

Without widespread gen-4 nuclear power, EVs won’t happen.

'Environmentalists Believe'... Why is NPR advocating establishment of religion 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦😷💉🤐🤡

the mainstream media Jeffrey Epstein channel is still selling a bill of goods to the mentally impaired

Where do these 'environmentalists' live? They clearly don't live in the US real world of a a very incomplete charging network that is going to take a decade or more to give cheap, equal, convenient charging access to everyone driving an EV.

Environmentalist are arrogant fundamentalist obsessed with their own relevancy, I heard ole Greta is now a millionaire, but the sheep love her

a local county procured dozens of electric busses, placed them in service with inadequate charging it's a hot mess

The real effort needs to go toward hydrogen electric, not battery.

I drive a Camry Hybrid. Averages 50 to 60 mpg and makes a fraction of the pollutants and CO2 of a regular midsize gas sedan. For those of us in rural areas, full EVs are toys at best. If everyone drove hybrids, we would be energy independent and our air would be much cleaner

elitists gonna elitist

I had a Chevy Silverado shutdown by faulty electrical system it's up for repo because I refuse to waste more 💰 on it and it's not even all electric and I am not alone!

Can someone post a link to the article that's outlines where the electricity for 100 million EVs originates?

I remember when NPR was non bias more than a decade ago. The format was to provide fact based information to the listener in a non partisan manner. Now they're letting go of 10% of their staff. The Times They Are A-Changin...

If you can’t get an EV because they aren’t available you buy a hybrid. How about an article on the limited availability of EVs?

Yeah whatever the case, not a big fan of Prius’ looks but damn the one in the pic looks sleek 😳

Hybrids are an electric vehicle with a small power station bolted on. Few people realize how weird it is to drag around a power station on our cars. They are heavy, dirty, and cost money to maintain. Few question why we still do it. Mostly because we are creatures of habit.

Who cares what environmentalists think? It’s because of them we don’t have superior efficient nuke power.

People won't buy better tech until it doesn't inconvenience them and manufacturers won't invest in better tech until there is a market. So we stagnate. Perfect being the enemy of good is why progress will take 5-10x longer than it should.

Neither are a legitimate option to deal environmental concerns.

Read that they are better than electrical vehicles

Put charging stations in every apartment and condo complex. Make solar power the predominant electricity source. Make the tax credits available for rebate at dealerships. Do these things, and the bottom 80 % will be buying EV's more than other car types.

Full electric cars/trucks/van/cargo. Improved public transit for the urban inclined. Good walking shoes. Bicycles. Freedom is going out to your fully charged BEV in the morning and never having to rely on fluctuating petrol prices and wars again. BEV's are liberating.

A lot of people live in apts, until apts have updated charging infrastructure then hybrid is the way to go. Most working people do not have 3 free hours dedicated to find and sit at an electric charger somewhere

Come talk to me about all electric when PG&E and CA have figured out a sustainable power grid. Until then, hybrid is the only thing I trust to be reliable transportation.

Child slaves mining not renewable lithium batteries weighing 1k each are good for the environment though? Laughable. 20 years from having the ability to go all electric.

EVs are an unnecessary detour on the path to efficient transit, and active mobility like walking and biking

My last two cars have been hybrids and do not get much better mileage than standard models. I want my next one to be a plug-in hybrid I think that’s a good bridge vehicle on the way to all electric when the infrastructure is built out.

Environmentalists have liberal arts degree fantasies around how the electricity will be generated to support all the electric cars they want.
