A senator has called on Ireland’s energy regulator to ensure the full €324 energy levy ‘sneakily’ taken from households to help big business is refunded

.

“People are outraged at the sneaky and underhanded manner in which this measure was introduced,” the Sinn Fein politician told us. Speaking during Commencement Matters at Seanad Éireann on Thursday, Ms Boylan said: “My question this morning is when are businesses going to be asked to repay the favour.

“By maths each household would be entitled to a refund of an additional €274.36 to each account for the €600m given that there are 2,186,854 domestic accounts in the country.“People are stopping me asking me when they are going to get their €50 back from ESB Networks, secondly they are saying ‘why is it only €50? They have been ripping us off for the last 12 years’.

Ms Boylan added: “Households pay a disproportionate amount... once again because it was designed to allow businesses to pay less to the PSO levy.” Reading a statement on the Minister's behalf, Deputy Jack Chambers said: “The commitment that overcharged households are repaid as soon as possible is welcomed and this sum should be repaid as soon as possible.“CRU has full independent responsibility to regulate network tariffs in the interests of energy customers with an emphasis on providing for security of supply, a high quality service and value for money.
