President Cyril Ramaphosa said that coal provided 80% of the country's energy needs and government had no plans to exclude it from its future energy mix.

He said that it was not true that government would be abandoning coal-fired sources.

"We've just built two mega power stations - Kusile and Medupi - that generate some 8,000 megawatts at great costs and there is just no way we are going to shut those two stations down," he said.

StephnCoetser I understand that but why they still doing load shedding

The problem of coal here is very supportive bcz they sold up a lot to overseas and I could never hered about a coalmine in europe which means a lot of minerals from Africa deliverd to europe to support the richest people so what about poor SA resident suffered bcz of a lot

With what money will SA develop new coal fired power stations? Maybe some adjustments to coal mines to supply Medupi & Kusile which have 20+ more yrs. But the disaster of these 2's construction should put pause to continuing down this road. Less single point failures needed
