HEAVIER punishment awaits water polluters as the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry is set to table new amendments that will introduce a maximum RM10mil fine and a 15-year jail term or both.

Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the heavier punishment would be introduced in amendments to the Water Industry Act 2006 that are scheduled to be tabled in the June sitting.Nik Nazmi also said consumers would be able to claim damage costs from polluters whose actions risk or cause the closure or disruption of the water supply system.

“The ministry is also looking into amendments to the Environment Quality Act 1974, which would be carried out in two phases.” “Under phase two, it will strengthen the Act as a whole and that it is currently being scrutinised by legal and environmental experts. Nik Nazmi also said the ministry would implement projects aimed at educating the public on ensuring river sustainability.
