Tesla has agreed to open up its charging network to non-Tesla electric vehicles after the U.S. government said it would foot the bill.

A trip from the Bay Area to Southern California highlights the miserable state of the charging network available to many electric vehicle drivers. The Tesla deal is part of the Biden administration’s $7.5-billion plan to fund 500,000 EV chargers throughout the U.S., mostly along major highways at 50-mile intervals. The spending was approved by Congress in 2021.

Currently, Tesla provides 28,000 charging ports at Supercharger stations in the U.S. and 40,000 worldwide. The $7.5 billion will be spread among charger manufacturers, other automakers, retail chains, land developers and others who qualify for public charger subsidies. Separately, Tesla might qualify for charger subsidies from state programs in California.

russ1mitchell The price paid at road trip-type stations isn't that important at this stage in the game. Reliable and available chargers that actually work (like Tesla's do) are well worth the cost trade off for the occasional road trip.

russ1mitchell Ludicrous. The goal is for the government to eliminate the very advantage Tesla has over other EVs. People are already waiting over an hour at most superchargers throughout LA. Surely you know this elonmusk

I dont even know anyone who has an EV. Our local walmart has a charger station and I’ve never seen a car use it.

So Biden doesn't like Musk huh?

Why is the government paying for this? Where are the so called fiscal conservatives to stop this!?

MedicareForAll

See how easy that was girls, all that was needed was the main ingredient, common sense it certainly had to have cost the owner a pretty penny to two, you reckon!

Wait didn’t they exclude teslas for the tax break?
