Minister in the presidency says declaration might not speed up solution to energy crisis

Minister in the presidency Mondli Gungubele says he has asked his team to analyse the impact of declaring a national state of disaster on the energy crisis. File photo. Picture: GCIS

The discussion on the declaration was at the top of the agenda at the two-day cabinet lekgotla at Sefako Makgatho presidential guest house in Pretoria on Thursday. The meeting is being chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa. “But there is a call that a disaster declaration wouldn’t help us jump other processes which sometimes do not help with the response to the situation. We do not have a response yet on whether there is a legal base for us to declare a disaster.”

Furthermore, he said, “I want to reassure South Africans that we are finding different measures, with or without the state of disaster, to make a difference in turning around the situation.”
