Energy bills pushed up by electricity charge, research shows

The way electricity prices are set has pushed UK household bills up by £7.2bn over two years, analysis suggests.

That means homes pay over the odds for power generated any other way, said the Carbon Tracker Initiative. Simon Francis, co-ordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, which campaigns for warm homes, said "injustice" in the electricity pricing system was at a "shocking scale" The CTI's report takes into account the need for sources of power that can be fired up immediately such as gas-fired, or provide near constant output such as nuclear, whereas wind power for example is weather-dependent.

What genius came up with this idea? It’s like going to a restaurant, everyone orders a burger except one person who orders a huge Wagyu steak, and then they all get charged for the price of a steak. Madness!

So reading this, we find that the Uk pays one price for electricity and that is the one dictated by the largest pproducer. What the BBC fails to mention is spliting the costs will only work if the price of gas remains high

Deliberately misleading headline to make it sound like energy prices aren't a rip off. There is no reason or justification for the prices being set based on the cost of the most expensive supply which only 40% of people get
