All they need is electricity from any outlet at all. Some are very slow but would still work. I've can carry extra gas but an EV can carry extra batteries. I assume the extra weight would lower overall efficiency?

Who cares? The proportion of people driving across the country is extraordinarily low. ICE will probably always have a place as a means of transportation.
