Gippsland has emerged as a leading location for global energy giants to build offshore wind and Origin is considering its own development.

Origin Energy is considering developing an offshore wind project in Gippsland, swelling the number of developers eyeing up the sector that has been earmarked by states and the federal government as critical if Australia to meet its lofty climate ambitions.

“Consistent with our strategy to accelerate renewable energy in our portfolio, Origin is at various stages of assessing a range of potential projects that could help meet our future demand for cleaner energy, including solar, pumped hydro, batteries, and both onshore and offshore wind,” said an Origin spokeswoman.Victoria’s coastline is ideal for offshore wind.

Interest in offshore wind in NSW comes despite the industry currently not permitted in the state. Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen will, within weeks, however,Moving into NSW will allow developers to capitalise on strong demand from Australia’s most populous state and projects hope to reuse existing infrastructure from retiring coal power stations.
