However, if we look at actual failures of Indiana’s power plants over the last several years, they’ve all been breakdowns at coal and gas plants. 2015 — A scrubber catches fire at CenterPoint’s AB Brown coal plant, knocking the plant out of commission.2021 — AES Indiana’s three-year-old Eagle Valley gas plant breaks down twice and is offline for nearly a year. At the same time, units at their Petersburg coal plant and Harding Street gas plant also break down, forcing AES to buy power off the market to serve Indianapolis.

2022 — CenterPoint’s Culley 3 coal unit breaks down, and the utility scours the country to find a replacement part, finally finding a part junked from a retired coal plant in Montana. Duke Energy Indiana has reported a number of breakdowns at its Gibson, Edwardsport and Cayuga coal plants and its Wheatland gas plant. Notably, Duke found that an outage at Cayuga in 2016 was caused by masking tape left behind during maintenance of the unit.
