A Department of Energy program looks to strengthen the supply chain for advanced battery systems.

But South 8 says its LiGas technology removes the risk of thermal runaway because the liquefied gas is harmless and can be safely vented.

The company plans on taking its technology to market in about six months to a year. In addition to going into EVs, South 8 officials say their batteries can be used for aerospace and defense purposes due to their ability to operate in low temperatures. The batteries also work at energy storage facilities.that can be charged quickly and last a long time.

“Our job is to push out the newest, coolest technology,” said Liu, who is also a nanoengineering professor at UC San Diego.
