Customers contacted over January energy bill changes

Britain's biggest energy suppliers have been contacting customers about a minimal price change starting in the new year, the BBC has learnt.

The changes will affect the 12 energy "regions" across Britain from the start of January and means suppliers are allowed to put their prices up to those new maximum levels for gas and electricity. The government's Energy Price Guarantee means that the average customer on a standard variable tariff pays 34p per kilowatt hour for electricity and 10.3p per kWh for gas. At those rates, a household with typical energy use will pay £2,500 a year.

The biggest changes are for customers paying in monthly or quarterly bills for their energy. Prices are increasing in all of the 14 areas for both gas and electricity with the biggest changes being for those in North Wales and Merseyside, as well as in London, which are both increasing for electricity by more than 1p per kWh.

My scotish power one is going up by £10....

Issuing millions of letters because the legislation says they must ? Another crazy rule set by government. Letters cost more than the price change, stupid or what?

In your article you say the billed rate in Merseyside will be the highest in Britain at 38.26/kWh. I beg to differ as I’ve received this in an email from EDF. They’ll be charging us 39.05/kWh from January.

Gas has been on average £35 per week according to meter reads its insane

Only add pennies? Mine is already 3x last year. Some consolation🙄 Perhaps we should see the profits each company makes added to out bills, they are forced to print it. Add in what people benefit the most.

given the cost of Gas is the lowest it has been for some time, there should be a reduction in charges surely?

The report doesn’t explain WHY the cost is different in the 12 Regions. Can someone provide an explanation ?

So more increases by utilities ok by Gov to do!

Utilita will be putting mine up in January

Yes but my EDF rate went DOWN though yes, minimal. And it stressed it won't change anything. More important is overcharging, direct debits too high, and not responding to queries and complaints for months. That needs dealing with.

Fun fact: Black people are 3% of the UK population but make up 80% of people in BBC articles.
