In a historic experiment in California scientsts acheived the golden prize of ‘energy gain’ – but there is a long way to go before fusion power plants are up and running
It acheived fusion ignition. The capsule produced a fusion reaction at its hottest point and released energy – a gain of about 1.5 megajoules, according to nuclear engineer Marvin Adams of the National Nuclear Security Administration. It has long been regarded as a future source of carbon-free power if its potential could be harnessed. But the leader of the successful team cautioned against unrealistic expectations.
