For one thing, it’s really easy to call for an end to subvention of your product when there’s not a government in the world that’s even, and is promising to keep the EV gravy train rolling until at least 2032. It’s pretty easy to virtue-signal something when you know there’s not a chance in Hell you’re going to actually have to act on it.
But wait, as Ron Popeil used to say, there’s more. BMW is also promising a simultaneous 30-per-cent improvement in range, most of that increase — about two-thirds, says— the result of the increased density of those new 46-millimetres cells. In plain terms, BMW is saying its extended range results from packing more of those raw materials — which, as I said, account for half of the total cost of the battery — into its cars.
Nonetheless, much of the extra cost of the BEV version comes down to electrification. In this case, that includes a 78-kilowatt-hour battery. Going by the last consensus on battery-pack pricing — back in 2021, by the way — of costs being US$131 per kilowatt-hour, that puts the manufacturing cost of the XC40’s battery somewhere in the range of US$10,000, which, at today’s exchange rate, works out to about 13,500 Can-bucks.
drivingdotca Yes & right with you, all CA has been calling BS to JustinTrudeau s_guilbeault EV claims - For all the reasons you state including that climate hypocrisy. liberal_party TrudeauMustGoNow
drivingdotca No --- EVs are too damn expensive.
drivingdotca I’ll be the person driving the last gas vehicle off the lot and driving it for the rest of my life or till the gas is gone. I’ll never buy electric.
drivingdotca No. Small ICE vehicles are still the best for the economy and environment over the whole lifecycle of the vehicle.
drivingdotca We’re basically going to end up with disposable cars. When the battery is done time for a new one. Buying a used EV is a big risk because you never know the status of the batteries.
drivingdotca Will switching to electric heat in your home save you money? (1970) No, it won't.
drivingdotca I doubt this is a good solution during downturn. Maybe after, when people have again some income
drivingdotca The article misses the point that ev cars are simpler with fewer components (no fuel pumps exhaust cooling, etc) so the only reason they are more expensive to manufacture today is the low volumes of production. And that is set to change.
drivingdotca Nope.
drivingdotca Can’t afford the power bills now!!!!
drivingdotca Talking to my mechanic, I learned another issue with hybrid or full electric-battery life. Weather & temperature fluctuations have a negative effect on performance plus the amount you use your vehicle--when vehicles are not driven daily, it negatively effects battery life
drivingdotca The article sums it up nicely. “I call bullshit”
drivingdotca Nope
drivingdotca No, it will cost more due to power consumption and replacing batteries
drivingdotca I’ve done the math on this EV stupidity. You need to factor in a new $20K battery at 160,000 Km. That 13 cents per km. Would the maintenance on a gas powered vehicle cost you $20K over 160,000 km? That 6 - 7 year old car with average driving?
drivingdotca Nope. I can’t rebuild a battery but I can rebuild a v8. So there’s that
drivingdotca When all the lemmings switch to EV, the price of gas should be quite low... I think I'll keep my gas SUV
drivingdotca Nope.
drivingdotca Is that why Switzerland is considering banning them?
drivingdotca EV’s are like paper straws
drivingdotca No
drivingdotca No it will only prevent you from driving any car, which is the ilterior motive. Not only will people be unable to afford replacement batteries, but there will be repeating power blackouts when they won't even be abke to charge their car. Only the very rich elite will own them.
drivingdotca No
drivingdotca Or the planet? A huge no to both
