The Albanese Government is facing severe backlash from the states over a potential gas price cap with the NSW Treasurer demanding Federal Labor not to “pass the buck”.

Labor’s pledge to commit to a mechanism to drive down soaring gas and energy prices has been threatened after Queensland and New South Wales hit back at a request to impose coal price caps of its own.has reported the two states were asked to impose the measure to avoid the Commonwealth paying tens of billions of dollars to the coal producers as per legal advice from the government’s solicitor.

A national price cap would force the Albanese Government to pay coal producers tens of billions of dollars in compensation. Picture: NCA Newswire/David Swift “The Federal Government has come out and said they will provide solutions to reduce the cost of living across the country and we support that,” Mr Perrottet said at a press conference on Thursday. The Premier also urged his federal counterparts to stump up money for compensation if price caps were introduced.

The state, territory and Commonwealth governments successfully freed up more LNG supply through the September Heads of Agreement, but the focus has now turned to prices. But the NSW Treasurer said the state was “expecting nothing less” than a national approach, rubbishing suggestions his government would introduce its own price cap on coal and gas.
