The mining giant’s chief scientist says it will only “produce hydrogen where we consume it” and has flagged daunting issues around switching to electric trucks.

| Shipping hydrogen long distances is potentially worse for the climate than burning natural gas, prompting Rio Tinto’s chief scientist to say the mining giant will only “produce hydrogen where we consume it”.

And his intervention underscores the practical challenges surrounding mining companies’ vaulting and often confidently stated ambitions to decarbonise their operations.Besides cutting their own inherently carbon-intensive operations, Rio and its peers are having to invest in tackling “scope 3 emissions” – helping their customers’ energy transitions – even in tough sectors such as steel and aluminium.

“This means it is better to burn natural gas than it is to transport hydrogen around the world and then consume it later. And this is the reason why when we look at hydrogen, we’re going to produce it where we consume it.” “So the electricity price that you pay is critical to getting low-cost hydrogen, [and] the capacity factor is also important. But really the key driver where the technology breakthrough has to happen is in the capex intensity of this technology.”Rio Tinto was working with US start-up Electric Hydrogen, which Dr Steward said had “found a way to drastically reduce the capital intensity of green-hydrogen electrolyser units – they’ve reduced this by a factor of three”.

He said battery-electric cars worked with a decent range, so the question was whether Rio could switch to a fleet of smaller-haul trucks.

Rubbish. Why have Caterpillar bought forward their switch it electric?

Remove the Diesel fool Fuel rebate In fact place a health and pollution cost onto every imported litre. To cover actual costs. W.H.O. declared diesel as in the same grade as Asbestos, mustard gas, Arsenic, cyanide. Diesel as cancer causing in the fine particulates

make green steel here with Japan as a partner

Chief scientist is honest - what a surprise

that's the major thing with hydrogen....it does not exist in natural form and has to be manufactured...and what is the cost of that going to be?
