The Coalition is adamant its plan to “turbocharge” Victorian onshore gas production and reserve 100 per cent of any new gas for local households and businesses will drive down energy prices. But some analysts are sceptical. | ANALYSIS

and reserve 100 per cent of any new gas for local households and businesses will drive down energy prices.

about the increasing risk of temporary winter gas-supply shortfalls emerging in southern states in coming years.Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said this year That followed a March 2020 report to the government by consultant Ernst & Young that concluded Victoria has the potential to produce a maximum of 830 petajoules of conventional gas from the Otway and Gippsland basins.

That suggests, at best, Victoria might be able to boost its remaining known gas reserves by roughly a third. This represents a significant amount of gas, but it would take up to 25 years to develop, involving significant drilling and other politically fraught interventions right when the state is supposed to be moving away from fossil fuels.Labor is claiming the plan could also run into legal strife.

Credit Suisse energy analyst Saul Kavonic questioned the purpose of Guy’s proposed reservation policy given there were no significant investments presently being made in developing onshore gas fields in Victoria. The Grattan Institute’s energy program director Tony Wood tolde this week: “I find it hard to see that it would actually do anything good, and I can think of reasons why it’s bordering on silly.

Just reading the headline leads me to believe this will take multiple years by which the problem might have already been solved by renewables

I’m sure all the farmers are going to be stoked with gas discovery occurring across their land.

LNP had 10 years to sort gas, even spruiked a gas led recovery. Within 2 month Australia had gas shortages. You'd have to be born yesterday to believe anything the LNP has to say on energy.

Matthew Guy will not get the opportunity to do this. It is one more nail in his coffin. People do not want fracking. The system of exporting our gas is what needs to be fixed.

Matt at the wheel of the LNP bus.

Finally a party looking to help the community rather than just taking. Victoria can’t afford another 4 years of DictatorDan Labor/Greens/Teals/Animal Justice/Reason Parties last! DanMustGo DodgyDan AndrewsMustGo LaborLast SackDanAndrews CorruptDan CookVsCrook

A return to fracking is dinosaur politics

Fracking is outlawed in the Victorian constitution so could you ask lobster guy how he's planning on keeping such a promise? lockthegate

BinTheAge

Anything he says is pointless They're going to lose the election & he'll be gone by end of month Then some other schmuck will have their own plan to charge us market prices 🙃

Without mentioning Fracking tell us all that you’re going to Fracking for a gas led recovery project. LNPFail.
