The U.S. wants to mine lithium for EVs to meet climate goals. But there's a trade-off, as residents near one proposed open-pit mine have learned: demolished homes, dug-up fields and disrupted streams.

Signs like this one, spotted October 26, 2022, are all over northern Gaston County, North Carolina, near where Piedmont Lithium wants to build a 1500-acre lithium mining and processing operation.Signs like this one, spotted October 26, 2022, are all over northern Gaston County, North Carolina, near where Piedmont Lithium wants to build a 1500-acre lithium mining and processing operation.CHARLOTTE, N.C. - As world leaders meet for another climate summit in Egypt, the U.S.

"So within this rock, it contains spodumene, the mineral. And that mineral spodumene contains lithium that we can convert to lithium hydroxide that then goes into batteries," Winter explains. When Piedmont Lithium dedicated its new headquarters in the nearby town of Belmont this summer, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis was there. The North Carolina Republican said the U.S. needs its own sources of lithium and lithium processing to counter China.

Locke Bell owns 120 acres backing up to the planned South Pit."Relative to the proposed mine, I have 4,160 feet of common boundary," he says. He's talking about old lithium mines nearby that closed in the 1980s and 1990s and are now contaminated with arsenic, which occurs naturally in the area's soil and rocks.Warren Snowden walks on his family farm in Gaston County, NC, with his dog Finn on October 29, 2022. We will never be able to solve the climate crisis with more consumption. Capitalism is killing the planet.

Cool and oil is the way to go

😅🤡

haha duh nuclear is the best option

I don’t think EVs are going to be the panacea we think. We need to cut the size and horsepower and greatly increase the MOG of the cars and trucks we are driving now. EVs are going to simply create different pollution issues

This happened in the 1950's - 70's in the city of Butte, Montana because of the Berkley Pit. Homes, neighborhoods, and the environment destroyed. It's the largest toxic superfund site in the USA with a lethal lake of water.

Want your cake and eat it too! No responsibility! Sounds like the left - or NPR.

Impose $5 fine on fart. Human farting is the real cause of the climate change.

And the death amd sufferrimg of other species.

timheidecker any concerns about the HEI Ranch? Was thinking of investing in neighboring areas but now...

BranVanChemist Electric cars will save the CAR INDUSTRY not necessarily the environment.

So what many indigenous communities have been moved for centuries by big businesses. We just had an example just recently or have you forgotten about the oil pipeline through indigenous land ?

Drilling for oil does less damage and is better for surrounding species.

To make EV successful, we need better and smarter battery technology not mining more lithium

There is very little green about EV battery technology. As we move away from fossil fuels, lets make sure we are replacing on source of harmful pollution for another.

Better stick to oil and coal then. No problems there.

there are no solutions, only trade offs.

A similar conflict w/ renewable energy development & conservation easements. Not all aspects of 'environmental action' can coexist - when we work to prevent development, it's in all forms. Dangerous & disappointing when we have to choose sides for the future.

Maybe it’s time to give up on lithium mining. Consider sodium based battery technology as an alternative.

Tesla may start exporting China-made EVs to U.S. and Canada, sources say - AutoblogTesla is considering exporting made-in-China electric cars to the United States, two people with knowledge of the planning told Reuters. Here's why. Maybe you missed the memo but Elon already said this was false and Reuters has taken down the article... This tweet protected by Who cares anyway. I am sure the number of consumer goods imprted from China is a ridiculously large number. I think Autoblog should talk about cars and not political, global trade economics. Check your sources before reporting. elonmusk maybe this is a parody account.
