Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says don’t expect any solutions from the government next week on the energy bills issue.

“If you’re expecting a solution on energy prices next week when parliament resumes, you’re out of luck,” Mr Clennell said. He said he’s been told there will be a plan in the next few weeks and the Albanese government is aware of the urgency of acting on Australians’ energy bills before it’s too late to stop the 50 per cent price rise next year.

He also said Energy Minister Chris Bowen, Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Resources Minister Madeleine King, and Industry Minister Ed Husic are all awaiting advice from their departments on options. “We saw former ACCC chair Rod Sims suggest a range of actions this morning, including a mandatory code of conduct which requires gas producers to supply domestic markets and a windfall profits tax on resources companies,” Mr Clennell said.

There’s an ‘absolute fear and anxiety’ about energy pricesRedBridge Group Director Simon Welsh says something from the budget which stuck with people is “an absolute fear and anxiety” about energy prices. “Those comments about the energy prices going up 30 to 50 per cent, we’re getting those numbers getting quoted back to us in focus groups,” he told Sky News Australia. “That’s a sign that people have really latched onto that and are really worried about that, sort of, cost of living pressure.”
