ANALYSIS: How Australia can break a vicious cycle by solving an inflation, deficit and energy crisis

And yet, a few months ago, the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission's put outof our energy situation which forced the federal government to take action.

The tiny cabal of global energy giants that ship that gas offshore has been raking in enormous profits this year, ever since Vladimir Putin's brutal and botched invasion of Ukraine sent global energy prices soaring. Since the competition regulator compiled this graph a few months back, the situation has further deteriorated. It estimates LNG netback prices — a domestic price measure — will hit just under $67 a gigajoule in October and remain around $60 for most of next year."Some users noted closure of operations was becoming a very real possibility in the short term and more significant demand destruction was likely over the longer term," the ACCC report stated.

There’s no point having a democratically elected government that’s beholden by Big Corp, selling our assets from under us and creating an artificial shortage. Especially if the govt won’t fully commit to supporting renewables. It’s really quite disgraceful, and disheartening.

Superb article! It is such an obvious solution one which will allow Australia to prosper even as the rest of the world goes into recession & yet Labor are doing nothing, their new ADGSM is even worse than the LNP! auspol

“gas giants overestimated the amount of gas they could extract only after they'd signed long-term export agreements, mostly with Chinese buyers”. That is easy; we should cut our exports to China in order to meet Australian need.

But I thought methane was a problem or is that just the excuse they are using to take people’s land.

Take control of the RBA.

Instead of using gas - why not burn your house down ? That will have the same effect - it will keep you warm for a short while, and like burning gas, it will accelerate climate change leading to loss of your home. Fossil fuels and nuclear are insane ideas. WE NEED TO GO GREEN !

You were in government for 9 years and did nothing. It takes decades to get nuclear up and running, so this discussion will have zero impact on energy prices.
