The unions join business leaders who are calling for more money to drive the transformation to a clean economy that doesn’t fuel climate change. In a letter to the prime minister, the unions say Canada should increase annual spending to at least two per cent of GDP on this transition.

OTTAWA — Unions representing tens of thousands of oil and gas workers are calling on the federal government to crank up spending to guide and supercharge Canada’s transformation to a clean energy economy.

“Our members are the ones who face the most serious threats of job loss and economic dislocation as the world makes the bumpy transition from fossil fuels to electricity as the primary energy source,” says the unions’ letter to Trudeau, which was obtained by the Star.

The letter also says the government should use its financing powers to ensure jobs created are well-paying and unionized as countries around the world shift away from fossil fuels to slash greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, declined to comment when contacted Wednesday about the letter, citing “very constructive” and ongoing talks with businesses and the government on this issue.

Perrin Beatty, the president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said there is a “significant” gap between current government spending and what his group argues is needed to drive down emissions and seize economic opportunities in the shift to green technology and clean energy. The chamber’s report pegs federal money budgeted for “net zero” initiatives in 2022-23 at $14.

This, instead of buying TMX and letting those costs spiral is what we should be spending money on

Well there's always committee work in Ottawa, rooting out & reporting on those fringe behaviours/thoughts.

Not going to happen in Alberta .

Really Many workers who were impacted by tech change (taxi drivers vs uber) got nothing from their governments who destroyed them.

Many are skilled trades, trades that are in demand already across canada and still continue to be in demand for non fossil fuel industries

Christ, generations of politicians and decision makers really fucked us.

Of course they do....I guess with the six figure salaries, they were just scraping by. 🙄

'Well, good luck with that.' - Justin Trudeau
