Opinion: Ditch gas, go solar: How to prepare for two more years of high energy bills | joelgibson

The government reference price is often thought of as a price cap, but technically, it’s not – retailers can move you to a higher price if they notify you first.reveals that at four out of 31 retailers in Victoria, the median electricity offer is now higher than the Victorian government reference price. For another nine retailers, it’s equal to that price. So only 20 providers have a median offer that is below the government price.

Fortunately, hundreds of thousands of households have got the message, with almost 7000 homes a day switching providers since June to avoid the worst price increases. For those who haven’t, spring bills could contain a double whammy of winter heating costs and much higher rates. “Looking beyond 2022–23, it is difficult to forecast retail costs, but they are expected to remain relatively high over the next two years,” says the Australian Energy Regulator. High inflation, interest rates, coal closures, and the costs of new renewables and transmission will flow through to us, the end users.
