Energy Minister Chris Bowen has shown himself to not be serious when it comes to nuclear energy – “one of the most technologically significant innovations of the last 75 years”, says author and environmental policy expert Michael Shellenberger.

This comes after Mr Bowen in Question Time on Wednesday mocked the Coalition’s push for nuclear energy.

“Nuclear energy is a serious technology, it’s a mark of being a developed nation, it’s a technology that is overwhelmingly responsible for the large majority of zero carbon energy in wealthy and developed countries around the world,” Mr Shellenberger told Sky News host Rowan Dean. “It’s also the only technology that’s really scalable given that hydroelectric dams, which also provide baseload power, are increasingly less reliable because of droughts.”

That's because its not needed. Yesterdays technology will wither and die.

where does news limited want to put a fukushima ? after the LNP had 9 years to propose one

We have a nuclear power plant, for medical research and medicines in the treatment of cancer. ✅ but let’s look at the economics of building one? Add the costs blowouts, and the timeline usually triple to completion… it’s a yeah nah!

What constitutes an expert?

Why the sudden plugs for nuclear now that Labor is in power. For 9 years the LNP never mentioned it.

Dr Ziggy Switkowski a great believer in nuclear power for Australia, said in 2018, 'the window for gigawatt scale nuclear has closed' why? Because renewable energy is cheaper.

This is where Chwis Bowen 🤡 green energy policy basically stands at the moment .

Bowen, just an O2 thief !.

Also the most expensive… doesn’t seem to align with your values?

If it's so good why hasn't anyone come up with a plan to build one that dosn't require billions of $ in government subsidies? Meantime there are cheaper option that work but you choose to ignore them.

Thank fuck for that!

The real headline “Showing intellect doesn’t fit the Sky narrative” there I fixed it for you.

Except it's not. Imagine a green future with out it. That's the mark of a developed country

3 Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukishima, Zaporizhzhia... And Maybe soon we will see another demonstration of the unconscionable dangers of Nuclear Power... Let's pray we don't.

The LNP had been in government for something like 24 of the last 30 years and they bring this tosh up now? Stop thinking we're all as green as you are cabbage looking.

Meanwhile a billion solar, wind and sea energy opportunities that don’t need to be dug up. China investing significantly in solar farms, same in Singapore. Smart money on these, not nuclear. MurdochCostelloStokesShitStains MurdochFreeWorld

Chris Bowen is serious about Chris Bowen.

The nuclear industry has been a dogs breakfast from start to finish. Unreliable, poor design and construction, nuclear meltdowns. toxic waste that can't be disposed of and it has always been THE most expensive source of electricity.

It would take 10 years at least and cost billions. It’s the most expensive energy to build. You can ask Tony Abbott why he didn’t build it 10 years ago (along with my $500 power saving that never came)

macsween_prue Yeah!! Go for it. Just look at Chernobyl and Fukushima. They played out well. More to come in Ukraine.

macsween_prue Shellenberger thinks we are being alarmist about climate change & global warming. You'd seriously have to ask where he's been and what more evidence he needs to understand we are going to hell on a hand basket if we don't stop burning fossil fuels.

You folks are too silly…oh, and some what mad too.

Chris Bowen is a disgusting little man. IPCC, UN, IEA and Science tells you wind/solar are not reliable and they need nuclear, China, Russia, Japan, UK, USA, France + 33 countries wrong but Chris peanut Bowan knows better….please 🙄

Chris peanut Bowen is a pathetic career politician playing childish politics. He’s playing games to the detriment of the country. He needs put politics aside and look at securing a bipartisan agreement on our energy security.

Nuclear is a ridiculous proposition.

Been trying to find a proponent of nuclear who can convincingly make a good case for nuclear. No one has done so. They all get very angry very quickly when being questioned based on science and facts. The IEA shows (2021 study) that nuclear is NOT needed for a zero CO2 grid.

LNP could have built one or more if they had of been serious whilst they were in government, but no, they only thought of it now so they can differentiate them selves from the government. All talk no action. Spare me.

Why not quote some credible sources? Nuclear isn’t the answer you think it is

Gosh, he sounds impartial. Oh, wait ...

hammerofleft Damaging to the environment. Nothing to do with being developed. Mark of sheep really. Let’s think about future generations rather then self interest

*was the mark of.... Accuracy matters.

Haven't your batteries run out yet!

Let's be clear Bowen is a climate cult nutter, a mad hatter. Three years of this guy will destroy Australia. Libs nuclear is needed, get on with it.

rowandean ShellenbergerMD There have been several reports that nuclear energy is not for Australia. This and others from CSIRO did you bother to read them to reach your conclusion?

The Parrot has not genuine foresight for this Country except driving the Costs of Electricity through the god damn roof😡😡😡

Bowen and his ilk won't buy into the nuclear deal cause they have personally invested heavily in renewable power...it's corruption at it core

Bowen’s dogs don’t bark😖
