Electricity providers have been found to be hiking standing charges by up to €300 during the energy crisis.
Some suppliers now charging up to €700 a year in standing charges, and these fees are charged regardless of how much energy a customer uses. The standing charge aims to reflect the cost of providing gas and electricity supply and it is not associated with the unit cost of energy.Chairman of the Consumers Association of Ireland Michael Kilcoyne has called on the Government to change the rules to allow the energy regulator to have a role in the setting of standing charges.
This news comes as many energy providers are also raising the prices of bills over the next few months.
