Huge import taxes and no buying incentives. Why does the South African government have policies that are clearly against electric vehicles? | Wheels24

The motor industry has been South Africa's only authentic industrial success story since 1994. But, despite its globally recognised standing, government narrow-mindedness could be its undoing.

The growth of South Africa's automotive sector is unlinked to local demand. In truth, the domestic market has been shrinking for years and remains nowhere near its 2006 peak. Wheels24 Because they corrupt

Wheels24 Which policies are those? I'm sure if you buy your electric car and have it imported to South Africa, our government won't turn it away.

Wheels24 Cause we don’t have electricity

Wheels24 Because we don’t have electricity, obviously.

Wheels24 What do you expect of a stupid government? Serves the automotive industry as well for being in cahoots with this evil regime.

Wheels24 I heard there is South African company that started producing electric vehicles as from August this year

Wheels24 Subsidising electric vehicles and removing tariffs on them esp. Teslas would incentivise Elon Musk to come deal with the power grid problem .That would be way cheaper and more efficient than recapitalising Eskom.

Wheels24 Overloading the system of course.

Wheels24 Is it possible that there are no kickbacks?

Wheels24 This is why:

Wheels24 How is this a question….?

Wheels24 Premium car makers don't struggle to sell EV's in SA. They'd be selling more if there wasn't a chip shortage. Govt should insentivise import of EV's like Hondae, Peugeot e208, Kia Niro etc by buying them for it's fleet, remove vat and encourage installation of charging stations

Wheels24 Because they are actually coal powered and we have lost the ability to convert coal to electricity.

southy_citizen Wheels24 Because they are captured and clearly funding the current petrol ⛽️ and diesel vehicles through grants.

Wheels24 🤑🤑🤑

Wheels24 Lithium mined by kids.. That's really green

Wheels24 Fuel taxes!! Well overdue!

Wheels24 Because Mantashe is first figuring out how to tax the sun .... ☀️

Wheels24 The EV's currently on sale in SA are from premium car makers and there isn't a big price difference between them and their ICE equivalents. If Govt subsidises them it'll be helping the rich. Govt must insentivise smaller EV's that working class people can afford.

Wheels24 Because there's no infrastructure to sustain the charging capacity!

Wheels24 Will change soon enough once a cadre gets a contract for installing charging stations

Wheels24 Answer : They only want deals that will benefit them. Opportunities to loot. Why do you think TESLA is not in South Africa. Elon Musk won’t do dirty deals.

Wheels24 We know that the EVs won’t contribute any fuel levies to the state Clearly the government wants to cash in on the fuel levy as much as possible, so perhaps part of the delay in lowering import duties is to continue cashing in through the ICE cars. The gov must adapt asap

Wheels24 Oh sweeties … why do we still have to explain this?! Unless the government is getting money directly from the deal then we don’t care at all about the actual cause. Going green is just another hustle to get money from Europe/WEF etc

Wheels24 I always hated bitcoin and thought it was a scam, till I met Helen_Truss , I made my first successful withdrawal of R400,000 thanks to Helen_Truss now am financially stable..

Wheels24 They quite we don't want quite cars here nonsense

Wheels24 The revenue from fuel is the golden goose!

Wheels24 Useless government

Wheels24 Useless government

Wheels24 Maybe if you think a bit we can't even keep our lights on. We will we charge the crap cars and who can afford it.

Wheels24 Capitalism

Wheels24 Because MYANC are useless, self absorbed thieves and SA has no electricity anyway so doesn't matter. VoetsekANC

Wheels24 They are 'trying' to sort out ESKOM issues
